Skirting
At right is a diagram of a wool fleece. On shearing day, the belly, leg, face, and head wool are usually separated and discarded as they are shorn by the shearer or shepherd. Most of the fleeces you buy should be skirted, but in the case it is not, here are some suggestions. Skirting is the process of removing sections of the fleece that are dirty, short, coarse or contaminated.
This includes, vegetable matter, sticks, burrs, dung tags and second cuts. The bottom line is, if you don't want it in your finished product--then it shouldn't be in your fleece.
